Graduate students who have met all regulatory requirements will request, with the authorization of their advisor and the approval of the Program Coordinator, the evaluation of their thesis using the Declaration of Eligibility form.
To submit the thesis, follow the instructions below on the cover and title page:
- Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo, seeking the degree of Doctor of Science.
- Program: Full name of the program (Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery).
- Thesis title: Exactly as shown on the cataloging form – Instructions for preparing the cataloging form.

Instructions for completing the Judging Committee Suggestion:
The Judging Committee Suggestion form must be submitted to this Coordination Office, via email at pos-graduacao@incor.usp.br, one month before the thesis is scheduled for submission, for approval by the CCP.
When suggesting Program alumni, the CCP will only accept those who have already published their thesis in an indexed journal;
Professors must have at least a doctorate;
The Judging Committee must include members who have participated in the Qualifying Exam.
The advisor, a full member, will be the chair of the Judging Committee. The Judging Committee’s suggestion must include six (6) members, including their full name, USP code, and the institution where they work (IES).
Suggested members who do not have a USP number or are not registered must complete the Visiting Professor form.
Tenured members:
One internal member: advisors, accredited co-advisors from the program itself, and the person responsible for a graduate course;
One external member of the program: members from outside the program with a USP affiliation or employees of the HC Complex;
One external member from another institution.
Alternates:
One internal member: advisors, accredited co-advisors from the program itself, and the person responsible for the graduate course;
One external member of the program: members from outside the program affiliated with USP or staff members of the HC Complex;
One external member from another institution.

In the absence or impediment of the advisor, the CPG will designate a substitute, who may be the co-advisor, if applicable, or a collaborator. Blood relatives of the student may not be part of the judging committees.
Thesis submission must be made online in the Janus system by inserting the following documentation:
- PDF of the thesis;
- Similarity and Plagiarism Verification Statement – Visit the website: https://www.fm.usp.br/biblioteca/pos-graduandos and check the Turnitin information;
- Proof of publication and/or submission of the article(s) originating from the thesis in journals with a Journal Citation Reports (JCR) IF or SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) Sites per Doc above the field median;
Proof of Eligibility; - The Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Program Committee, in a meeting on May 14, 2018, approved financial support, through reimbursement, for the English revision of the scientific article originating from the thesis, with Editage, www.editage.com.br, advanced review, normal deadline.
The student will make the payment by credit card and then request a refund.
Reimbursement requests, with the advisor’s approval, must be completed on a form and accompanied by the invoice, credit card statement, and proof of payment.
Articles, books, abstracts of papers presented at meetings, and any other publication or form of dissemination of activities resulting, in whole or in part, must be referenced as specified below (Ordinance No. 2309), and the advisor’s name must be included in the list of authors:
Heart Institute (InCor), Hospital das Clínicas HCFMUSP, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sao Paulo, Sao Paulo, SP, BR.
If the article is not published within one year, and the student no longer wishes to publish it, the advisor may do so and be the first author.
Thesis Based on Compilation of Articles – Resolution 7695/2019
On September 16, 2011, the FMUSP Graduate Committee approved the rules for the presentation of dissertations and theses in the form of compilations of articles, as per Ordinance 0278-11-CPGE – Dissertations and Theses with Compilation of Articles
1) Theses must contain at least two articles accepted for publication.
2) The date the submission of the article(s) must be made after the applicant’s enrollment in the program.
3) The accepted/published article(s) must contain data related to the objective of the research project submitted to the CPG.
4) The student must be the first author of the article(s).
5) The advisor must be a co-author of the article(s).
6) The articles must have been accepted/published in journals with a Journal Citation Reports (JCR) or SJR SCImago Journal & Country Rank (IF) greater than or equal to 1.0, and at least one of the articles must be in a journal with a Journal Citation Reports (JCR) or SJR SCImago Journal & Country Rank (IF) greater than or equal to 2.0.
7) Candidates seeking a doctoral degree who meet the requirements of Article 7 of the Graduate Program Regulations (Resolution 7493, dated March 27, 2018) will have their thesis project evaluated by the Graduate Committee and, once approved, will be forwarded to the Congregation. In this particular situation, items 2, 3, 4, and 5 will not be required.
8) The thesis must be presented and submitted in a bound volume, containing the research project approved by CAPPesq or by the Ethics Committee of the area in which the work was developed. Except for candidates covered by item 7, a critical analysis written in: Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French.
9) Full citation of the articles/manuscripts compiled and discussed in the thesis.
10) Critical analysis in which the contributions of the article(s) are analyzed, discussed, and summarized.
The thesis defense will follow the following procedure:
The thesis will be judged in a public session, which should not exceed five hours. Public thesis defenses may be conducted remotely via videoconference, streamlining the formation and implementation of the Examining Boards (Circ. CoPGR 24 2011) and in accordance with the instructions.
The student will present the content of their work for a maximum of 60 minutes prior to the defense;
each examiner will have 20 minutes to present their arguments, with the candidate having equal time to respond or, if both parties agree, to engage in dialogue. The total time should not exceed 40 minutes.
each examiner will award a pass or fail in a closed session held immediately after the defense. The presentation referred to in the first item will not be considered.
The candidate who receives approval from the majority of examiners will be considered qualified. The judging committee will forward the Defense Judgment Minutes to the CCP for review, which will then be forwarded to the CPG for approval.
The candidate deemed qualified in the thesis defense will be entitled to a Doctor of Science – Cardiology diploma, which is automatically issued along with their academic transcripts. The completed diplomas are listed at http://www.spg.fm.usp.br/spg/#/diploma, and can be picked up later at the FMUSP Graduate Services Office. It is also possible to download it from the Alumni website.
