He graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1982), received his Doctor of Medicine (Clinical Surgery) in 1997 from the University of São Paulo, and was approved for the Associate Professorship exam, also from the University of São Paulo (1999). He has 330 full-length articles published in journals, and his most consistent research areas are Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Transplants, Robotics, Thoracic Oncology, and Ventricular Assist Devices. In the area of experimental research, he heads the Medical Investigation Laboratory (LIM 61) of Thoracic Surgery. He is currently Secretary General of the São Paulo Academy of Medicine (2019-2021), Scientific Director of the São Paulo Medical Association (APM), and Editor-in-Chief of the São Paulo Medical Journal and the Diagnosis & Treatment Journal.
He is a Full Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP), Head of the Thoracic Surgery Unit and Member of the Board of Directors of the Heart Institute (InCor), Head of the Department of Cardiopneumology and Coordinator of the Postgraduate Program in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery at FMUSP.
