He graduated in Medicine from the University of São Paulo (1980) and received his Doctorate in Medicine (Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery) from the University of São Paulo (1994).
He is currently an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine and Director of the Cardiovascular Research Surgical Laboratory at the Heart Institute (InCor) at the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP, where he works full-time and exclusively.
Editor-in-Chief of the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology, he participates as a reviewer or member of the Editorial Board of the Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Artificial Organs, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery. He is a Consultant Reviewer for CAPES, FAPESP and CNPQ.

- Mechanisms for preventing ischemia and reperfusion injuries in the surgical approach to the aortic arch and thoracic aorta
