He graduated in Medicine from the ABC University Foundation School of Medicine (1978) and received his Doctor of Medicine (Surgery) from the University of São Paulo (1991).
He is currently a Full Professor of Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of São Paulo School of Medicine, Director of the Cardiovascular Surgery Service, and Vice-President of the Board of Directors of the Heart Institute (InCor) at the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP.
He serves as a reviewer or member of the Editorial Board of the Heart Surgery Forum, the Brazilian Archives of Cardiology, the Brazilian Journal of Pulmonology, and the Brazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery. He is the Coordinator of the Technical Committee of the Guidelines Project of the Brazilian Medical Association. He is a Consultant Reviewer for FAPESP and CNPq.
